LUNDU: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development is planning to establish a KafeTEEN Youth Centre in Kuching, aiming to provide teenagers with more opportunities for meaningful and enriching activities.

Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that Sarawak’s existing KafeTEEN centres in Sri Aman and Long Bedian, have successfully hosted various well-received programmes for local youths.

“It seems we need more KafeTEEN centres as they provide young people with valuable spaces to socialise and grow.

“God willing, we may start with Kuching, where we are considering setting up a new office there that could serve as the next KafeTEEN centre,” she said after attending the ‘Kem Kasih Keluarga’ programme and the state-level Family Month celebration at Pantai Pugu, Lundu last Saturday (Nov 16).

She shared that the KafeTEEN programme offers teenagers opportunities to express themselves while acquiring skills in various areas such as entrepreneurship and social activities.

Activities such as preparing and selling food also help foster entrepreneurial talents and allow youths to share and learn together.

“These centres create a safe environment for teenagers, addressing parental concerns by offering productive after-school activities that encourage personal growth and positive engagement.

“Since its launch in 2017, the KafeTEEN programme has served as a platform for teenagers to discuss issues, share experiences and access resources on topics like mental health, social relationships, education and self-development.

“It also facilitates interactions with experts and mentors in various fields, further enriching the learning experience.”

Nancy added that the programme promotes stronger community ties by fostering family values and strengthening bonds between families and the broader society.
