KUCHING: Six teams will represent Sarawak at the 12th National Dragon and Lion Dance Championship 2024 set to take place from Nov 22-24, at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Kampar, Perak.
Sarawak Dragon Lion Dance Wushu Association president Matthew Lee said the teams will compete in four events namely the Luminous Dragon Dance, Southern Lion Traditional, Hypo Southern Lion Dance and Northern Lion Dance.
“This is one of the strongest teams we have ever sent to the national championships, and for the first time, we have requested Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah to hand over the (Sarawak) flag as a gesture of good luck.
“Hopefully, we will bring back medals for Sarawak,” he said when met by reporters at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly Complex here Monday (Nov 18).
Lee added that each state can send two teams per event, up to a maximum of eight teams in total for the championship.
Despite being short by two teams for the Luminous Dragon Dance and Northern Lion Dance events, he said, the Sarawak contingent is fully committed to delivering the best performance and bringing medals home.
Earlier, the Sarawak flag was officially handed over by Abdul Karim to the president of the Chinese Martial Arts Association (CMAA) of Kuching District Chester Lim Hian Thoon.
