SIMUNJAN: The rodent infestation control campaign is aimed at educating the public on preventive measures for rodent breeding and the importance of maintaining cleanliness in the surrounding areas.

Simunjan District Council (MDS) secretary Oldrige Ripat Eric said rodents not only damage property but also carry serious diseases such as leptospirosis (rat urine disease).

“The diseases carried by rodents can result in death.

“According to data from the Sarawak State Health Department (JKNS), there has been an increase in rodent activity, especially in food premises and public markets, particularly in drains,” he said this in his speech at the ‘Rodent Infestation Control Campaign 2024: Rat-Free Community’ at Dewan Setia Simunjan yesterday (Nov 18).

In addition, he also emphasised that this community service (gotong-royong) programme offers an opportunity for residents to join efforts in effectively combatting rodent breeding.

He added that as an extra measure, MDS has also provided ‘Rat Bat Stations’ to food premises under MDS supervision.

Organised by MDS, the initiative is aimed to help vendors ensure their premises are rodent-free and that the food they provide is safe for consumers.

“I hopes the programme can continue to be implemented in Simunjan twn with the support of all parties, including traders and the local community,” he said.
