Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s State Budget 2025 highlights a public-centric approach aimed at leveraging Sarawak’s resources to bolster the economy.
With an emphasis on inclusive development and improving the people’s well-being, the budget allocates funding to create job opportunities and raise household incomes.
This expansionary approach, encapsulated under the theme “Together Building a Prosperous Future,” has drawn praise and insights from various leaders, including Datuk Lo Khere Chiang (GPS-Batu Kitang).

Sarawak Tribune: What do you think of the Premier’s approach to increasing government spending as a means to stimulate economic growth?
Lo Khere Chiang: Increasing government spending is definitely the way to go—if the government has the resources. Under the capable leadership of Premier Abang Johari, Sarawak does have the money to invest in development projects, such as infrastructure, housing, and construction. These initiatives can significantly improve our economy.

Why is spending so vital for economic growth?
Imagine a scenario where everyone earns a salary but nobody spends. It would be disastrous for the economy. For instance, if no one buys cakes from a bakery, the business would collapse, and the whole town would suffer financially. Spending creates a ripple effect—when you buy bread or cakes, the bakery earns income. The bakery then buys flour and other ingredients, driving the supply chain. This is how spending fuels economic growth and benefits everyone.

Are these allocations sufficient to address poverty in the long term?

The government under Abang Johari is working to improve living standards and raise incomes. This involves increasing disposable income, which is crucial. Measures like maintaining some of the country’s lowest electricity tariffs, water bills, and assessment rates help reduce household expenses.
Furthermore, initiatives like free university education and pocket money for students, starting next year, encourage young people to pursue education and upskill themselves. This focus on human resource development aligns with the government’s push toward a digital economy, equipping our workforce for high-growth industries.

How can community leaders support government initiatives?

Community leaders must understand government policies and guide their communities to align with these opportunities. For instance, the agriculture sector presents potential—we currently import cabbages from China, but we could grow them locally. The government is incentivising such initiatives, as well as supporting the handicraft industry, to encourage local economic growth.

Could you share some initiatives in Batu Kitang that align with the Premier’s goals?

In my constituency, I collaborate with Kolej Komuniti Mas Gading, Bau, to run community programmes. These include weaving, beading, and other skills training in areas like Haji Baki and Semaba. Village leaders bring residents together to participate, helping them build sustainable livelihoods while preserving Sarawak’s unique traditions. The products they create can be sold, improving their disposable income and contributing to the state’s economy.
