KUCHING: With hard work, game exposure and focused training programmes, the Sarawak rugby team has the potential to make a major impact in future Maksak national tournaments, says team captain Mohd Adha Mohamed Zabidi.
“Alhamdulillah, Sarawak Maksak rugby team finished as the runners-up in the Plate category,” Mohd Adha said, expressing gratitude for the team’s performance throughout the competition.
He commended the dedication and commitment of every player, highlighting their efforts to exceed expectations and give over 100 per cent to secure the best possible result for the Sarawak team.
He also emphasised the strong team “chemistry” that developed between senior and junior players, both on and off the field.
Despite their impressive performance, Sarawak’s journey ended in the Cup quarter-finals after a narrow defeat to ATM.
“Unfortunately, luck was not on our side. We were unable to progress to the Cup semi-finals and bring the champion’s Cup back to the Land of the Hornbills.
“On behalf of all the players, I apologise for not achieving that goal,” Mohd Adha said to New Sarawak Tribune when contacted recently.
He noted that, despite the setback, the team’s performance this year represented a significant milestone for Sarawak rugby.
“For me, this is the best rugby team Sarawak has ever had, based on past performances and this year’s results.”
Looking ahead, Mohd Adha is confident that the team will continue to improve.
“With the training programmes and exposure matches we’re planning, we’re determined to make an impact and create a surprise at Maksak 2025,” he said, referencing next year’s tournament organised by the Government Servants Welfare and Sports Council (Maksak).
Mohd Adha also thanked everyone involved, both directly and indirectly, in supporting the Sarawak rugby team during the Maksak national tournament held in Kelantan last weekend.
“We truly appreciate everyone’s efforts, and we’re already looking forward to the next challenge.”
