KAPIT: A total of 125 secondary school students experienced at first hand on how to construct solar powered fans and scrub machines using basic materials and simple electric circuits during the “PETRONAS Powering Knowledge: Discover PETRONAS @Schools Reach Out Kapit” programme.

Hosted at the Kapit Community Hall on Saturday, the programme featured a range of game activities led by Petrosains, including a thrilling Combustion Science Show as well as an interactive “Giant Jenga” and “Makey Makey” sessions.

Designed to ignite the students’ interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET), the programme included motivational talks highlighting career opportunities in the oil and gas (O&G) industry.

PETRONAS also showcased its education sponsorships under the Powering Knowledge initiative, reinforcing its commitment to nurture future talent.

The symbolic launch of the Discover PETRONAS @Schools Reach Out Kapit programme was officiated by Minister of Works and Kapit Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

Earlier this month, a similar outreach was held in Miri, engaging 210 students and teachers from 16 secondary schools.

Before year-end, PETRONAS plans to extend this initiative to another 175 students in Gedong during a session scheduled for Nov 27, 2024.

In addition to its educational initiatives, PETRONAS took a step further in supporting the Kapit community by contributing medical equipment worth RM50,000 to the Kapit Health Clinic.

The handover was led by general manager of PETRONAS Sarawak, Norazibah Md Rabu and witnessed by Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Law and Customs) Jefferson Jamit Unyat, who is also Bukit Goram assemblyman.

The contributions included medical devices such as a syringe pump, a vital sign monitor, 10 blood glucose meters, 10 boxes of glucometer strips and 13 electronic blood pressure monitors.

Other non-medical items include five standard wheelchairs, three high stool lab chairs, a standard water dispenser, an auto refill water dispenser, a fridge, three industrial wall fans, two portable PA systems, four audio microphones, and 30 banquet chairs.

PETRONAS allocated RM1.3 million for this five-year programme to improve the quality of healthcare services in 26 rural health clinics across Sarawak by providing essential medical equipment to replace obsolete and incomplete equipment.

This initiative is part of the “Improvement of Rural Healthcare Services and Facilities in Sarawak”, implemented by PETRONAS in collaboration with the Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers of Sarawak (SABATI) and the Sarawak State Health Department (JKNS).
