SIBU: The Bawang Assan Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Branch Delegates’ Meeting on Sunday approved a motion to propose the redelineation of the Bawang Assan state constituency.
The motion will be tabled at the PBB Triennial General Meeting (TGM) at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) in February next year.
The proposed redelineation seeks to create a new state constituency that will encompass the polling districts of Rassau, Bawang Assan, and Penasu.
Newly re-elected PBB Bawang Assan Branch chairman, Romeo Christopher Tegong, expressed optimism that the redelineation would accelerate development in the area by 2030, addressing long-standing challenges.
“Our representative has been from the opposition bloc since 2018 and only returned to the government bloc this year. This has left us significantly behind in terms of development,” he said when met by reporters after the meeting at a renowned hotel here on Sunday.
Meanwhile, when asked if the redelineation could be completed before the next election, Romeo, who also serves as political secretary to the Sarawak Premier, said it was achievable.
“If discussions begin this year or next year, and the proposal is tabled during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting in May before proceeding to Parliament for approval, it should be on time, as the term ends at the end of 2026,” he said.
He stressed that everyone especially those in Bawang Assan area are looking forward into the redelineation.
Meanwhile, other motions raised during the delegates’ meeting included the quota for local authority (PBT) members, the salaries and allowances of community leaders (KMKK), and development initiatives for the Bawang Assan area.
