KUCHING: A total of 1,030 runners participated in The Silent Run 4.0 – Kuching Edition, which was flagged off from the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) foyer here on Sunday, marking an important milestone in integrating the deaf community into mainstream society.
The event was attended by MBKS mayor Wee Hong Seng, Sarawak Deaf Sports Association (SSDeaf) president Ko Ming Liang, and The Silent Run 4.0 – Kuching Edition organising chairman Hii Lik Nguong.
Wee expressed his appreciation to SSDeaf for organising the run.
“I am touched by the overwhelming support for The Silent Run 4.0, especially in Kuching, and its impact in fostering social inclusion. Your support is an important step in empowering the deaf community,” he said.
The run also made history with 2,306 participants from all over Sarawak, including editions in Sibu, Miri, and here.
Hii, a deaf leader, played a key role in organising the event. With just three dedicated deaf committees, they managed to hold the run in three main locations.
Previously, The Silent Run 4.0 – Sibu Edition held on May 5, 2024 attracted 649 participants, followed by The Silent Run 4.0 – Miri Edition with 627 runners. Now, Kuching has recorded the highest participation with 1,030 participants.
The event also aimed to raise funds to enable deaf athletes to receive adequate training to compete at the highest level, including the Deaflympics.
“It is important that we provide full support to deaf athletes, especially in their preparations to represent Sarawak at the Deaf Games Malaysia (SOPMA) and other competitions,” added Wee.
Through sports, SSDeaf continues to strive to empower the deaf community and create opportunities for them to achieve success. This event demonstrates that inclusivity and unity can be achieved with the support of all parties.
“Together, let us continue to support initiatives like this for a brighter future for the deaf community in Sarawak,” he said.
