KUCHING: Seventeen-year-old Filipino-Chinese kickboxer Ryan Chua Juan made a successful debut at the Underground Boxing Club’s Octagon Fight Challenge (UG 3) on Saturday.

Competing in the featherweight category, Ryan shed 5kg to make weight, weighing in at 64.5kg on fight day.

“My first win was great. I could have knocked him out, but the referee and the bell saved him,” Ryan told Sarawak Tribune.

Crediting his faith and rigorous training, Ryan said, “I just want to praise the Lord for strengthening me and protecting me. No weapon formed against me shall prosper.”

Expressing gratitude, he added, “I want to thank my parents, coach, friends, Texas, Aro, and everyone else for their support.”

With this victory, Ryan is excited about his future in kickboxing.

“This is my first fight and win, and I’m just thankful,” he said.

The fight, held at The Underground Sports Centre on Jalan Song, showcased young local talent and generated excitement among boxing and kickboxing enthusiasts.
