MIRI: Sarawak, like many regions worldwide, is witnessing a troubling surge in diabetes and obesity rates, with the prevalence of these conditions posing significant challenges to public health, the economy, and overall quality of life.

Recent studies show that 15 per cent of Sarawak’s adult population is living with diabetes, a figure significantly higher than the national average.

This alarming statistic was revealed in a speech by the Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, during the International Diabetes and Obesity Conference gala dinner on Sunday.

The speech, read by Minister of Transport Sarawak, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, highlighted the concurrent rise in obesity rates, which now affect nearly 30 per cent of the state’s population.

“These rising numbers are a stark reminder of the urgent need to act,” the speech noted. Dr Sim attributed these trends to unhealthy dietary habits, sedentary lifestyles, and insufficient awareness about preventive measures.

Also present at the gala dinner was Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak, Datuk Sebastian Ting, and Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.

Despite these daunting statistics, the Sarawak government has been proactive in addressing the crises.

“Under the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, we have launched several initiatives to combat diabetes and obesity,” Dr. Sim’s speech emphasized.

Key initiatives include:
“Healthy Sarawak” Campaigns to promote healthier lifestyles
Diabetes Care and Control Programs to improve early detection and management
Collaborations with NGOs and Private Sectors to enhance resource sharing and outreach
School-Based Health Education Programs to instil healthy habits among the younger generation
Integration of Digital Health Solutions for better monitoring and preventive care

Dr. Sim emphasized the importance of platforms like the International Diabetes and Obesity Conference in fostering knowledge exchange, innovation, and strategic collaborations to address these pressing health challenges.

“I am confident that the insights and solutions shared here will contribute significantly to our collective efforts,” the speech concluded.
The Sarawak government’s continued commitment to public health underscores the urgency of tackling diabetes and obesity head-on to secure a healthier future for its population.
