SARATOK: After more than nine years of forging machetes, Awang Suhaili Awang Narawi has become a well-known figure in Kampung Kaba, with his handcrafted machetes in high demand across the region.
The seasoned blacksmith, who specializes in creating various types of machetes, said his business has grown steadily since he started nearly a decade ago.
“I am now entering my ninth year of earning a living by forging iron and producing various types of machete,” he said.
He said this during a visit by Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri.
Awang Suhaili explained that he often receives orders from residents in the area and outside.
“Not only producing machete with hilt, but also producing machete sheaths according to customer requests,” he said.
During the visit, Mohamad expressed admiration for Awang Suhaili’s craftsmanship and discussed ways to support his business, particularly in addressing workplace safety concerns.
“We will explore his applications and forward them to agencies such as the Social Security Organisation (Socso) to ensure he receives the necessary support,” Mohamad said.
Mohamad also pointed out the importance of preserving this traditional skill, while calling on relevant agencies to help promote Awang Suhaili’s business and train younger generations to carry on the craft.
“This is a unique art form that deserves recognition and preservation. I hope that Kampung Kaba will one day be renowned for its legacy in machete making,” he added.
