MUKAH: The government has always focused on helping the disabled (OKU) in terms of facilities, employment and the economy.

Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine said the government, through the Social Welfare Department (JKM), is channeling assistance to this group.

“This includes assistance for the Unemployed (BTB), the Disabled Workers’ Allowance (EPOKU) and assistance for the care of the disabled.

“In addition, this group can also apply for assistance with support devices such as prosthetic legs, wheelchairs and other devices,” he said.

He said this in his speech read by Mukah District Officer Peleadzman Ahip at the Mukah Divisional Level Disabled Day organised by the Mukah Divisional Social Welfare Office, here, recently.

He said the Welfare Department also helps the disabled who are involved in small businesses through a Launch Grant Assistance of RM5,000 to purchase equipment or business capital.

He explained that apart from the disabled, the government has increased the allowance for Community Rehabilitation Centre (PPDK) trainees from RM150 to RM300 per month.

“In addition, the government has strengthened the OKU Registration Campaign and this allows them to enjoy almost 30 facilities and privileges provided by the government and private sectors.

“To diversify the facilities and privileges for the OKU community, I suggest the community and especially private companies work together to increase the number of facilities and privileges available.

“I also hope the private sector or employers will help the OKU by providing suitable job opportunities so that they can be independent and have their own income,” he said.
