KUCHING: A drunk man who punched and choked his wife until she fainted got his comeuppance when he was sentenced to seven days in prison and fined RM2,000 on Tuesday (Nov 26).

Azzizul Abdillah, 40, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan to the charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A of the same Code for intentionally causing hurt to his 36-year-old wife.

If convicted, he can be sentenced to prison for a term of up to one year or fined up to RM2,000 or both.

The offence was committed at a house in the Kampung Jawa Expansion Scheme, Batu 12, at around 10.30pm on Nov 19.

Failure to pay the fine will lead to a 10 months imprisonment in addition to the one-week prison sentence.

Based on the facts of the case, an argument occurred between the couple and Azzizul punched his wife in the right eye and choked her until she fainted.

His wife regained consciousness after her in-laws woke her up by fanning her body. She was later taken to the hospital for further treatment, and a police report was made for further action.

The cause of the fight is believed to be dissatisfaction as the wife reprimanded Azzizul for turning off the air conditioner.

Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case while the man was unrepresented by counsel.
