SIBU: The launch of the Geriatrik Komuniti or Geko programme is seen as a timely response to the growing ageing population in Sarawak.

Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said that Geko was pioneered in one of the clinics in Kuching by Dr Sally and was adopted as a model for elderly care by the Sarawak Health Department in 2023.

“According to the Department of Statistics, the estimated number of persons aged 60 and above in the Sibu district in 2023 is 34,200 out of a total population of 252,900, or 13.5 per cent of people aged 60 and above.

“This makes Sibu an ageing population; hence, this programme is timely and very much needed,” he said during the programme’s launch at the Jalan Oya Health Clinic here, Tuesday (Nov 26).

The Pelawan assemblyman added that at Klinik Kesihatan Jalan Oya, there are currently 10 active patients under this programme, with 4 to 5 patients joining monthly.

“I am sure if the benefits of this programme are properly promoted, many more will join.”

He added that he understands that Jalan Oya Clinic is very busy, with over 1,000 outpatients daily, and among those attendees, most are older persons.

“Although most are still active and independent, some may need help and extraordinary intervention. This is where Geko will be helpful to them.

“Some are not aware that they are at risk for falls, dementia, and other geriatric conditions, and having an assessment during this programme will be helpful to mitigate some of these conditions.”

He hopes that the programme will continue to grow and that all other clinics will be able to start this programme as well.

Meanwhile, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek said that the programme represents a forward thinking solution to the realities of an aging population.

“Its focus on preventive care, early diagnosis, and holistic management of age-related health issues demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for older adults.

“By providing accessible geriatric care in facilities like Jalan Oya Health Clinic, this programme ensures that senior citizens can access specialised healthcare services close to home.

“This is particularly important in communities like ours, where healthcare accessibility may vary.”

Also present was Sibu divisional health officer Dr Teh Jo Hun.
