KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has launched a Solid Waste Segregation Programme to educate the younger generation on the importance of sustainable waste management.

Its Public Health, Environment, and Services Committee chairperson, Associate Professor Dr. Sopian Bujang, said this programme, which targets both primary and secondary school students, seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of improper waste disposal, which negatively impacts both human health and the environment.

“Illegal disposal of solid waste such as plastics, aluminum, and other materials by the roadside or in illegal dump sites can create breeding grounds for mosquitoes and animals that may spread diseases,” he said during an award presentation ceremony at the closing of the Solid Waste Education and Recycling Programme here Tuesday (Nov26).

He added that environmental education is a key pillar of the council’s agenda to encourage sustainable practices in the Padawan community.

“Education is the main catalyst for long-term change. Integrating environmental awareness into school curricula and daily activities through programmes like this is a significant step.
