JERLUN: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar is urging the government to review the demerit point system under the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) which is seen as a burden to the people.

He said the system is seen as unfair and should be abolished because if one is summoned under the automated enforcement system (AES), the offender would be punished twice and this is a form of victimisation.

“I hope the government would give due consideration so that no road user is punished twice by receiving demerit points and paying the compound.

“The demerit system causes the offender to get point deduction until one’s licence is eventually suspended. To me this is unfair and the Transport Ministry should relook the issue which was my stand from the start,” he said.

The Deputy Human Resource Minister was met by reporters after presenting a funeral benefit cheque of RM2,000 to the family of Putrajaya National Registration Department employee, Norwahidah Abdul Hamid, in Kampung Baru Tepi Laut, Kuala Kerpan here yesterday.

Norwahidah was killed in a fire at a single-storey terraced house in Taman Desa Vista, in Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi, Sepang on Jan 28.

Meanwhile, when asked to comment on a criticism by former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on AES, Mahfuz refused to be drawn into the criticism.

In a Facebook posting, Najib chided Mahfuz after the government decided to add another 11 AES cameras and questioned why the MP for Pokok Sena was not disputing the decision like he used to do during BN’s administration. – Bernama
