MIRI: The atmosphere of harmony and tolerance during festivals, including the Chinese New Year, is proof of Malaysia’s standing as a “special multicultural country”, Piasau Assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting said.
“That being said, our leaders and citizens must work hand in hand to maintain the peace and harmony through tolerance, unity and mutual understanding,” he said in his Chinese New Year message.
Sebastian said the political scene and the economic conditions of late had, unfortunately, put the nation in a challenging situation, especially when slanders and rumours affected the people.
He said it was important for everyone to work together to overcome these issues.
“The Sarawak government, in particular, has always strived to strengthen the spirit of friendship and brotherhood among its people, knowing that, maintaining peace and harmony is the key to nation building,” he said.
Ting, who is Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) secretary general, said the people of Sarawak should be proud of being part of the nation-building process.
“Despite a small group of mischief makers, the majority of our people embrace the rich and multicultural elements of our state and country.
“Miri, our beautiful home, has transformed from a being a sleepy fishing village into a modern city with infrastructures and other facilities.
“It is now home to people of various races and religious background,” he said.
Ting advised Satawakians, including their people’s representatives and grassroots leaders, to work together in ensuring that Sarawak will continue to prosper and attain greater heights.
