KUCHING: Two of Sarawak Energy’s coal-fired power plants won the prestigious Sarawak Chief Minister’s Environmental Award 2015/2016 in recognition of the plants’ efforts to ensure minimal environmental impact of its operations.

Sejingkat Power Corporation Sdn Bhd clinched the Platinum award while Mukah Power Generation received the Gold award in the Large Industries category under Electricity supply services.

Chief Minister of Sarawak Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg presented the awards to Sharbini Suhaili, Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer and Lu Yew Hung, Group Chief Operating Officer respectively at the award ceremony organised by Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak and Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday.

This is Sejingkat Power Corporation’s second Platinum award from CMEA having won the top award as well as a Gold previously whereas for Mukah Power Generation, this is its second Gold award from CMEA.

Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Sharbini Suhaili along with the top management and staff from Sejingkat Coal-fired Power Plant and Mukah Coal-fired Power Plant pose with the awards.

Commenting on the awards, Sharbini said,” This award is testament to our commitment towards environmental protection. It demonstrates how serious we are in reducing our carbon footprint through better management and environmental practices as we continue to pursue a good generation mix to meet electricity demand in Sarawak and also expand regionally.

“We are appreciative of this award and will continue our efforts to improve our operation processes incorporating sustainable practices that are mindful of the environment.”

In the last CMEA in 2014, Sejingkat Power Corporation emerged as overall winner in the Large Industries Services Category – Telecommunication, Electricity Supply, Waste Disposal and Water Supply. During that year, Sarawak Energy also clinched two golds under the same category for its BintuluTanjungKidurong Power Station and Mukah Power Generation.

Another facility, the Batang Ai Hydro Power Station won gold in the Services and Other Sectors (Medium Industries Category).
