KUCHING: A total of 429 summonses were issued by the state Road Transport Department (JPJ) throughout the Ops Motorcycle operation in conjunction with Ops Selamat 14 during the Chinese New Year celebration from Jan 29 to Feb 12.
Its deputy chief Erick Jusiang said the summonses were issued for various offenses, and the majority was for driving without a licence and road tax.
“The special operations involved six agencies comprising 30 individuals from JPJ, police (three), National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) (17), state Immigration Department (16), Environmental Department (seven), Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (three) and personnel from the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
“We have issued 429 summonses throughout the operation, mostly for no driving licence, no road tax and expired road tax,” he said when met by reporters during the operation.
Erick pointed out that AADK successfully inspected 175 road users of which 24 people were tested positive for drugs.
Police issued 50 summonses for various offences throughout the operation while the Environmental Department checked 70 vehicles, and 50 foreigners were inspected by the Immigration Department.
Commenting further, one of the targets of the operation was motorcyclists with no driving licence and those with expired road tax.
“Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to advise parents to stop their children who do not have a driving licence from riding motorcycles as they could endanger themselves and other road users.”
During the operation conducted along the Kuching-Samarahan expressway, a total of 60 vehicles were inspected with 22 summonses issued for various offences by JPJ.
The police issued 23 summonses, the environmental department inspected 236 motorcycles with one machine failing the tests.
Two Indonesians were detained by the Immigration Department for not having valid documentations.
Erick also pointed out that no commercial vehicles (bus) were involved in any accident throughout Op Selamat 14.
“We will continue conducting our routine patrol and enforcement and continue to cooperate with other agencies under the inter-agencies operations.”
