Even as the first round of models appeared for Limkokwing Fashion Club’s show at the London Fashion Week the audience drew in a collective intake of breath. The signature style with its explored ideas of the African, Asian and European fashion heritage was simultaneously fabulous and surreally gorgeous.
Attended by an eclectic community of fashion educators, designers, jetsetting celebrities, fashion bloggers, ambassadors and representatives from the embassies of Malaysia, Monaco, China and Swaziland, it was a full-house at the Freemasons Hall, Covent Garden, London. The interior of the hall showcased marble, stained glass, wrought iron and angular patterns which was the perfect backdrop to showcase this hip and contemporary show. The audience also included representatives from The Times, Farfetch.com, The Royal Society of Art, Mayfair Times, and a team from Vice Paris.
Limkokwing Fashion Club, the world’s first fashion label created by students for students represented the diverse cultures of the world was both the culmination of their academic preparation and the precipice from which they will dive into the fashion world.
Each innovative piece told the unique stories of the different cultures that make the veritable melting pot of students from all over the world. The bold, yet very current and wearable designs featured a mixture of rich cross-cultural prints and fabrics. It explored the techniques of the Far East and southern Africa where Limkokwing University has built strong relationships with by establishing campuses on the African continent.
All the hard work paid off in the one-of-a-kind look practicing its innovative approach that made Malaysia’s University of the Future fashion show which was certainly ahead of some of the major trends in fashion.
“This collection represents where we come from,” mused Dato’ Tiffanee Marie Lim, Limkokwing University Vice President, Brand Creativity and Talent Development. “Limkokwing is a very unique network. There was no way we would pass up the chance to say something about how we live and exchange ideas.”
“We have always been committed to help launch the careers of our students, and are honoured to have a platform of this magnitude to present their work,” she added.
Ten of the University’s outstanding graduates and students from Malaysia, Iran, Pakistan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, China and Taiwan from the Faculty of Fashion and Lifestyle Creativity participated. Their designs were one-of-a-kind pieces based on the Asian and African Culture Meet in Europe’s theme. A team from the Malaysian campus worked with a team from Limkokwing’s London campus to organise the event, which was held in partnership with Toni & Guy, label m, and Kryolan Make Up.
The event marked the culmination of hundreds of hours of preparation, from the first seeds of creative ideas to their successful realisation on the runway. In addition, the garments reflected intensive preparation in design, draping and ideation.
Limkokwing University was selected by a panel of industry experts and was the only foreign university to have its own slot. It was a collaborative effort between the University and Fashion Scout – UK’s largest independent showcase for emerging and established designers for London Fashion Week. It is also
widely known for championing and developing creative talents across Europe.
This was not the first time the University took part in London Fashion Week. In 2012, Limkokwing made Botswana fashion history when Batswana students participated in the London Fashion Week.
With a track record of producing high profile fashion events in the world’s fashion capitals such as London, Paris, Jakarta and Osaka, the Faculty of Fashion and Lifestyle Creativity at Limkokwing University is one of the best places to train for a career in the international fashion industry.
The University which is the first Asian and first Commonwealth university in the UK, provides certificate programs, Diploma in Fashion and Retail Design, Diploma in Lifestyle Design, focusing on hair and make-up, as well as a Bachelors of Arts (Hons) in Fashion and Retail Design.
