KUCHING: A 56-year-old Chinese man has recently sought help from Sarawak United People’s Party Public Complaints Bureau (SPCB) to change his incorrect MyKad religious status.
It was understood that the problem arose when the man, from Desa Wira Resettlement Scheme, Batu Kawa, changed his old identity card to the digital based MyKad and discovered that his religious status had been changed to Islam.
During the meeting with SPCB chief, Wilfred Yap, the man told him that he had never converted his religion to Islam and he wished to have the incorrect religious status be rectified.
Following the meeting, Yap brought the man to the National Registration Department (NRD) at Jalan Simpang Tiga to find out the cause of his predicament and see how the issue could be resolved.
Upon checking with the Birth Certificate Section, the officer in charge of the section told Yap that man is not a Muslim and the religious status stated on the latter’s MyKad is incorrect.
The matter was then referred to the Identity Card Section where the on duty officer explained to Yap and the man the procedure involved in amending the status.
Yap said the process of amending the religious status would take between four and six months.
