SIBU: The government has been urged to build more telecommunication towers in Song District, about two-hour boat ride from here.
DAP Song coordinator Paren Nyawi yesterday said communication by phone has always been a problem for the district’s 25,000 population because of the lack of telecommunication towers.
‘There are 160 longhouses in the district, most of which are out of telecommunication range,” he said.
Paren said only 20 per cent of the total area of the district enjoys the facility.
“The state government has been talking about transforming the state’s economy into a digital one. If that is so, Song District should not be left out of the plan,” he said.
According to Paren, telecommunication towers should be built to serve Nanga Bangkit, Ulu Bangkit, Ulu Tekalit, Ulu Iran, Katibas Tengah, Nanga Banjor, Nanga Takan and Ulu Katibas.
Paren said Nanga Engkuah has one tower that has yet to function.
According to him, if this tower is functional it would serve longhouse residents of Nanga Setuchok, Nanga Sesibau and Nanga Engkuah which has SK Nanga Engkuah, Nanga Engkuah Health Clinic and Nanga Engkuah Agriculture Sub-station.
