KAPIT: Some thirty staff members of the Kapit District Council (KDC), comprising the public health units and support staff from the various sections including from its Song and Belaga branches, attended a one-day in-house training programme and workshop on stray dogs removal operation using tranquilisers or injection guns organised by the council that ended on Tuesday afternoon.

The workshop programme was to heed to the government’s call for the fight against the rabies outbreak throughout the state.

The facilitator of the workshop was the council’s senior assistant environmental health officer, Favian Masing Lintang. Among the issues were a talk on rabies, a briefing on the Local Authorities (Dog Licensing And Control) By-Laws 2018, an explanation on the guideline or Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) on dog removal operations and hands-on practical session in preparing for the operation.

For the dog removal ground operation activity, the participants were divided into two groups with one operating at the new township at Bleteh and airport areas, and the other at the town centre. Officiating at the closing and certificate presentation ceremony was the council’s secretary, Jabang Juntan.

“One of the main purposes of the training is to fulfil the training needs of the staff, especially the support group, as they need to attend at least 24 hours of training a year. With this kind of training, at least the staff members are able to fulfil their targeted training hours,” Jabang said.

He hoped that with the knowledge gained, the participants could actively carry out their dog removal operations at their respective areas to reduce the population of stray dogs and to prevent the spread of rabies.
