KUCHING: The Sarawak Labour Department yesterday launched a special operation called ‘Ops Ladang’ simultaneously throughout the state and successfully detected 95 violations under the labour ordinance.
State Labour Department director Awang Raduan Awang Omar said the special operation which started at 8am and ended at 4pm involved 44 enforcement officers from 16 branches stade-wide.
He said the special operation focused on agriculture, fisheries and logging sector as well as other related activities.
“During the operations we inspected 68 workplaces and as a result
of the inspection a total of 95 violations have been detected,” said Awang Raduan.
According to Awang Raduan, these violations involved employer’s failure to
provide and keep a list of terms and conditions of employment (17 cases),
failure to prepare and keep personal register of employees (17 cases), failure to provide and keep payrolls and allowances (13 cases), failure to pay employees (10 cases), failure to show notice of rest day at workplace (5 cases), failure to give notice of business start up (5 cases), making deductions of wages other than permits (4 cases), failure to pay minimum wage (3 cases), failure to pay worker’s wages on time (3 cases) and others.
In addition, he said 25 violation notices were issued to employers to take corrective actions.
He said if these employers failed to do so, legal action would be taken against them.
“The Sarawak Labor Department will continue with the special operations at workplaces in other sectors to ensure full compliance with labour laws and ensure the rights of workers under the law are protected,” he said.
