KUCHING: A secondary school using international syllabus will be built, says Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The school would focus on poor students so that they would have a chance at international-level education; he told the media after declaring open the Sin Chew Education Fair here.
Abang Johari added that the state government would subsidise the school fees.
“We have plans to set up the secondary school, similar to Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM), but it will have international syllabus, from Form 1 to Form 5.
“We are still identifying the exact location for the school, but it will be in Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri soon,” he said.
“The state government wants to help poor students get quality education and facilities for young talented students to enter international universities.”
Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin recently went to Cambridge to discuss the syllabus and we believe that we could introduce it very soon,” Abang Johari added.
“We have Yayasan Sarawak scholarships to give to students to pursue their studies overseas and once they have completed their studies, they have to return and serve the state well.
“The moment we have the industries ready, then we can provide job opportunities for everyone. Furthermore, this will balance the economy in the state,” he said.
Abang Johari said the state should look at Singapore, adding, “They give their talented students the chance to pursue their studies overseas on scholarships and once they have completed their studies, they must return to their country (as per agreed in the scholarships) and serve the country with the knowledge they have gained.”
