KUALA LUMPUR: The “Tambok Stool”, which is inspired by woven bags used by the Bidayuh in Sarawak, is among creative works produced by students of universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) at the Malaysian International Furniture Festival (MIFF).
Norfarhanan Norhasim, who designed the stool, said he was inspired by the tambok woven bags, a traditional equipment used by the Bidayuh native tribe of Sarawak for carrying goods.
“I combine the idea for use as a storage space and also for sitting,” he told Bernama when met at the festival at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) here.
The MIFF opens today until this Monday.
Norfarhanan is among five third year Unimas students at the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts who were selected by the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (PUSAKA) to showcase their prototype furniture at the MIFF 2019.
The students were selected through a competition organised by Pusaka and Unimas last year.
The competition was held to promote creative works by local students, as well as to serve as a platform to encourage young people to venture into furniture designing.
Meanwhile, student Muhammad Taufiq Md Yazid, produced a ‘Kumbs Console’ table, which he said, was inspired by the motif of the traditional hand-woven textile of the Iban women, known as Pua Kumbu.
The uniqueness of his design is that it could be used for various purposes, including for decoration.
