KUCHING: Sarawak Energy aims to become the state’s employer of choice by providing a conducive working environment for its staff and equal access to development opportunities.

State Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah commended the corporation for providing a childcare centre at its premises.

“By providing a childcare centre, I believe the employees could work better and not have to worry about their children,” she said during the launching of the Little Power Genius (LPG) childcare.

She also added that women’s participation in the workforce had increased in recent years, however, “there are more females entering universities compared to males, but after they graduate, they work for a while and then when they have children, they tend to leave their jobs because they are worried about their children’s welfare.”

“According to Department of Statistics Malaysia, the ratio of females enrolled in higher education was 53.4 pct compared to males with only 46.6 pct but this is a completely different case when it comes to employment.”

Fatimah said there were 234 registered childcare centres in the state of which 13 were at workplaces, including LPGat Sarawak Energy, adding that she was looking forward to more such facilities being established.

Earlier, SEB chief executive officer Datu Sharbini Suhaili said the corporation believed that by taking good care of its employees’ welfare, this would boost their spirits and ensure they were focused in their work.

“LPG was set up under our High Performance Culture key focus area, which aims to make Sarawak Energy a great place to work, and the preferred employer for Sarawakian talents.”

“It is one of our efforts to provide our talents (especially parents with little children) with the right kind of support system so that they can choose to stay, participate and benefit from the corporation development programmes,” he said in his speech.

LPG has been in operation at Menara Sarawak Energy since last December and caters for children aged between three months to four years.
