KUCHING: The 4th Regiment Royal Armoured Corps (RAC) stopped an attempt to smuggle two stolen vehicles across the border on Friday.
Acting on information provided by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), a team of four RAC personnel led by Major Yusuf Iskandar carried out an operation near the Malaysia-Indonesia border.
During the operation, the army personnel spotted two four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles along the back road (jalan tikus), some 200 metres away from the border.
Upon seeing the army personnel in the area, two 4WD drivers sped off into an oil palm near Kampung Serikin but the sudden turn resulted in both vehicles getting stuck in the mud.
This prompted the suspects to abandon the vehicles and run away.
After some checking, the RAC personnel discovered that one of the vehicles was reported missing recently. They also found drug-related paraphernalia in the same vehicle.
A police report was lodged and the vehicles were handed over to the Bau District Police Headquarters for further action.
The seizure was estimated to be worth around RM70,000.
Meanwhile, the 4th Regiment RAC is keeping close tabs on every possible ‘jalan tikus’ believed to be the routes used by smugglers to bring stolen vehicles and illegal goods into Kalimantan, Indonesia.
