Dropbox is adding a new limit to its free basic service so that users can only use it on three devices at a time, while paying users can use the file hosting service on as many devices as they like.
There is one small loophole: If you have been using the free service on more than three devices since before March, you can still continue to use it on those devices. However you will no longer be able to add more devices.
If the limit of devices has been reached, but you want to add a new one, you can unlink and link a new device fairly easily. Dropbox has a step-by-step guide on how to do this.
Dropbox’s free service offers 2 GB of storage capacity. For 10 dollars a month you can upgrade to 1 TB of space, for 2 TB you will pay 19,99 dollars per month. However, Google has dropped its pricing of 2 TB storage to 10 dollars a month.
Other file hosting services such as Google Drive and Microsoft’s OneDrive are not limiting the number of devices permitted yet. Evernote introduced a limit for its free service in 2016. – dpa
