KUCHING: The State Labour Department discovered that 29 hotels state-wide had violated the labour laws.
The violations were discovered during a special operation codenamed “Ops Hotel” launched simultaneously throughout the state yesterday where a total of 80 workplaces were checked, the department said in a statement yesterday.
The operation which started from 8am until 4pm involved 43 enforcement officers from 15 branch offices of the department throughout the state.
The statement added that the operation focused on workplaces in the hotel business.
The offences committed included failure of employers to provide and keep record of employees’ terms and conditions of employment (12 cases), employer’s failure to make and keep personal register of workers (10 cases), employer’s failure to pay minimum wage (7 cases), employer’s failure to pay overtime payment to the employee (6 cases), failure of employer to pay salary to employee (5 cases), employer failure to pay their employees’ salaries for working during public holidays (5 cases) and failure to give annual leave to employees (5 cases).
The department also said that it will to launch special operations in places of employment in other sectors to ensure compliance with the labour laws and to ensure the rights of workers under the laws are protected.
