Career fair attracts over 4,000 youths, students

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Over 4,000 youths and students turned up at the Talent Recruitment and Career Exhibition Fair at Arena Gemilang, DeTAR Putra, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas)here yesterday to look for jobs.

The two-day career fair, which began yesterday, is participated by over 100 companies and offers 10,000 job opportunities. It is jointly organised by Unimas and Jobstreet company.

Comedians Zero and Ajak Shiro from Maharaja Lawak Mega are also on hand to entertain and provide motivational talks to graduates.

The career fair enables students to make direct contacts with potential employers.

Kaveta and Joshilla

However, Kaveta Reveendran, an aquatic resource science graduate, said she was unable to find suitable companies to do her internship.

“The only company that I look forward to engaging with is Petronas,” said the 22-year-old girl from Kuala Lumpur.

Her classmate Joshilla Krishnan was as worried as Kaveta since they had to get their internship by June.

Final year mechanical engineering students Fatin Mahira and her friend Suraya Zulkifli, both 23, were at the fair to find jobs.

“We both studied mechanical and manufacturing engineering and are still looking for the companies that suit our qualifications other than oil and gas companies.

“Thus, we hope the interviews will help us improve our soft skills which are preferred by top employers in Sarawak,” they said.

Fatin and Suraya

Chairman of Unimas Board of Directors Tan Sri Datuk Panglima Sulong Matjeraie officiated at the opening of the fair yesterday.

Among those present at the opening ceremony were Unimas’ Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation Prof Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim who represented Vice Chancellor, Senior Director of Unimas’ Centre for Student Development Prof Dr Siti Raudzah Ghazali, Head of Unimas’ Protégé Secretariat Norashikin Dato’ Ismail and Jobstreet Malaysia Head of Marketing Joyce Kau.
