KUCHING: A concrete bridge is badly needed in Kampung Sg. Burung, Siburan to replace the belian bridge built by the villagers in the 80s, said Sanjan Daik, political secretary to Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Chong Chieng Jen.

Sanjan said the present bridge was unsafe for vehicles and small lorries and could crack anytime under heavy weight.

The village’s JKKK chairman Sunuk Sambung had requested for the new bridge when Sanjan visited them recently to present a cheque of RM3000 on behalf of Chong to repair the gravel road leading to their village.

“We are thankful to Chong even though the amount of fund he gave was small but it meant a lot to us,” said Sunuk.

When Sanjan visited them, each family had already contributed a few hundred ringgit for the construction of the new bridge.

The villagers are hoping for a new concrete bridge.

According to Sunuk, the villagers need at least RM20,000 to build the new bridge on a “gotong-royong” (mutual assist) basis.

The villagers hoped that the government could speed up their application to have their village gazetted so that funds could be allocated to build facilities for them.
