SIBU: A civil servant who believed that he had found his true love, sent RM60,000 as dowry to the woman for their marriage only to realise that he was another victim of love scam.
Sarawak commercial crime investigation department chief Supt Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah said that the 28-year-old victim had deposited the money in several transactions to an account given by the woman from Nov 2017 to April 2019.
The money was from a personal loan which he had taken from a bank.
“In Nov 2017, the victim got to know of the woman who identified herself as Aishah on Facebook. Subsequently, they stayed connected through WhatsApp,” he added.
Supt Mustafa said the woman then brought up the question of marriage to which he agreed to marry her.
“However, for their marriage to work, the woman asked him to send as much money as possible for the dowry,” he said.
After transferring a total of RM60,000 in several transactions from Nov 2017 to early April 2019, the victim realised that he had been cheated after failing to contact the perpetrator.
The woman had also closed her Facebook account. He then lodged a police report on April 19.
Supt Mustafa also advised the public so that they would not fall for such scam.
“Do not trust any strangers whom you have befriended from social media without knowing their background. Most of love scam victims did not even meet the other party but had easily sent them money,” he added.
