SIBU: A Chinese independent primary school, SJK(C) Kiew Nang, which will be celebrating Teacher’s Day this Friday has suffered a major blow when its canteen was razed to the ground while 70 per cent of its administrative block was destroyed in a fire yesterday.
The state Fire and Rescue Department said a distress call was received at 4.24pm and 18 firefighters were despatched to the scene. They managed to control the fire at 4.55pm.
Acting Sibu Bomba chief, Wan Kamaruddin Wan Ahmad said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
“The fire started from the canteen before spreading to the administrative block. We managed to arrive on time to prevent the fire from affecting the four-classroom blocks,” he added.
The school has 390 students.
Meanwhile, Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said the school would be closed today (May 22) due to the fire.
