KUCHING: It is a common sight in Kuching to see an overflow of garbage or rubbish strewn all over during weekends in commercial centres, especially at the back lanes of eateries, and the situation is made worse during a period of public holidays.
Who is to be blamed for the eyesores? Yesterday, just after the garbage collection at about 9.10am, rubbish was strewn all over the ground at Jalan Song.
Apparently, it is not the problem of the rubbish collectors to clean up the overflow of garbage which may be thrown out by disheartened workers after a long night or caused by stray cats which rummage through unclosed bins filled to the brim Cats, dogs or rodents might have contributed to the mess after feeding on leftover food in plastic bags left on the ground.
The piles of rubbish left behind are indeed eyesores and they, unfortunately, can be found in most parts of the city.
Perhaps, the authorities concerned should work towards getting one big bin for eateries instead of a clutter of bins, or conduct random checks in these areas to put a stop to this unsanitary habit.
This is necessary as a lot of food preparation is done at most back lanes near to the bins
