KUCHING: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) has been urged to explore new sources of energy to improve the living standards of the people.
In dwelling on this during SEB’s “Majlis Sambutan Gawai-Raya” at Menara Sarawak Energy here yesterday Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg spoke of “value” in the full spectrum of the energy structure.
“I can assure you that Sarawak has all the raw materials,” he said.
On research and development of hydrogen fuel cell technology, he reiterated the need for SEB to continue with them.
“The world is shifting towards fuel cells and so I have requested SEB to find a new source of energy to move our cars using hydrogen from water in our hydro-electric dams,” he said.
Touching on his recent meeting with a Japanese delegation, Abang Johari said that the visitors were interested in the state’s effort to produce methanol.
“This goes to show that we have certain roles and can make certain contributions to global development,” he said.
He mentioned that sometimes people asked why he has weird ideas.
“They are not weird. When you read more, you know more. In my case, I know the possibilities of my ideas as the technologies are available,” he said.
“We also have DnA (data and analytics) where big data can be analysed for producing effective results. This is the basis of future development.”
Abang Johari also urged industry players to be forward-looking and explore new products that can be marketed overseas to increase the state’s revenue.
