KUCHING: Sarawak can expect more Chinese tourists annually with attractive tourism packages aimed at specific target groups.
Consul Jiang Ying (pic) of the People’s Republic of China Consulate General in Kuching said about 50,000 tourists from China visited Kuching last year, an increase over the 2017
figure.
She cited the recent launch of a WeChat profile by the Sarawak Tourism Board as a good initiative to attract more Chinese tourists to the state.
Jiang said this during a courtesy visit to Tribune Press Sdn Bhd at Metrocity commercial precint, Jalan Matang here on Thursday. She was accompanied by the deputy consul-general Zhang Yang who revealed that the consulate was issuing about 200 visas daily to Chinese visitors.
“These visas are for different groups such as tourists,
business people, and even students,” elaborated Jiang.
Despite the discontinuation of AirAsia’s Kuching-Shenzhen direct flight, the consul expects the number of tourists from China to Sarawak to increase this year.
To achieve this growth, she shared several suggestions including more publicity to be done by the Tourism Ministry.
“More tourism packages should also be arranged, aimed at specific groups such as the elderly or children,” Jiang recommended.
The visitors were briefed on the operations of Tribune Press Sdn Bhd by New Sarawak Tribune (NST) and Suara Sarawak (SS) chief operating officer Mohamad Sardon Zainal, NST executive editor Rajah Murugaiah, SS deputy executive editor Awang Rosli Awang Jaya, and sales manager Jason Chua.
