KUCHING: The historic move in amending the Federal Constitution to allow for automatic registration for 18 years old to vote will give a big advantage to the age group, provided, of course, they exercise their voting rights, said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Masing.
Masing was commenting on the Bill to lower the voting age from 21 to 18 which was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday.
He noted that the Bumiputera would have a distinct advantage, over non-bumis in deciding who should be the government. In Malaya, for instance, the Malays will have big influence in deciding the government of their choice!
“Over the years, Bumiputera did not use their numerical superiority to determine the government in Malaysia as they were not keen in registering as voters. Now they have no excuse if the Malays fail to administer this nation. Just exercise your voting right, the world is ours,” said Masing.
He however cautioned that to administer the nation, it must be done with fairness and justice.
