KUCHING: Kuchingites are urged to play their roles in protecting and preserving the community and environment and not wait for the waste
collectors.
This advice came from the State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohd Morshidi Abdul Ghani when he officiated at the award presentation for the Sarawak River Art Competition at Kuching Waterfront, yesterday. It was organised in connection with the celebration of Sarawak Day.
“Do not rely too much on Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) personnel. Pick up the rubbish in front of you. Show to others that we can make a difference and pass this (attitude) on,” he said.
Morshidi, who is also the Old Kuching SMART Heritage (OKSHe) deputy chairman, further stated that the government is currently embarking on smart city initiatives with focus on digital transformation towards a smart Kuching.
“We will follow other countries like China whose rubbish bins are equipped with sensors that can alert people that they are full and signal the garbage collectors to get them.
“These can be achieved with existing technology. That is our aim, to bring in smart traffic management and smart disaster management with a central control and monitoring system.
“I hope we will be able to make this a reality very soon to make Kuching a better place,” he said.
The event was organised by the Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) Kuching on Education for Sustainable Development, UCSI University, OKSHe and the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA).
