KABONG: The gotong-royong programme can inculcate the value of appreciation, cooperation and volunteerism in communities.

Kabong assemblyman Mohd Chee Kadir said the programme at Tanjung Kembang beach provided locals a chance to work together to preserve the environment, and not just leave it to the government to do everything.

He said today’s society needed to play a wider role in keeping the environment clean.

“The attitude of some people, who like to throw their rubbish everywhere, can have a detrimental effect on the environment.

“Responsibility needs to be shared and this will create a society that loves beauty and wellbeing,” he said here yesterday.

Chee Kadir also said that the state’s concern for the cleanliness of its beaches was because the environment was one of the attractions to draw in tourists.

He said there were still many beaches in the state which were not well-managed and polluted with various waste, especially plastic materials.

“It is the responsibility of all parties to ensure that residents living near rivers do not dispose of their rubbish anyhow. More awareness campaigns need to be organised to clear the shores and rivers in Sarawak from time to time,” he added.
