MUKAH: Mukah National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) district chief Felynora Joseph Na said instead of being arrested and subjected to legal action those involved in drug abuse should just surrender to us.
Felynora was commenting on AADK’s actions in curbing drug abuse activities in this district.
“It is better for those involved in drug abuse or drug addicts to come to us voluntarily and not coerced, in order to undergo treatment.
“We are now encouraging them to use this option because if they don’t they will have a drug record which will make their lives difficult, if they were to appear in court.
“This should be avoided especially for the youth, especially students in higher learning institutions because it can affect their education and future. Thus, it is best that they
voluntarily come to us,” he said when met by Sarawak Voice.
“Thus far, there is a clear impact on those who have come forward to us and this has greatly influenced their peers to make the same move based on last year’s statistics,” he explained.
It is clear that AADK will continue with its efforts to prevent and eliminate drug abuse altogether.
“We are here not only to arrest them but we also hold prevention and treatment activities, hold awareness programmes at schools, exhibitions and provide information to public.
“In the treatment we will carry out a programme for surveillance cases on an individual either voluntarily or under arrest as they have to undergo two years of treatment where every month they have to participate in special programmes such as community service activities, religious activities and more,” he said.
Mukah Resident Hamdiah Bakir (pic) when met hoped that social problems in the district can be reduced.
“Our wish for the community here is for them to live in peace and harmony because we know that the economy is looking good. If there social problems are widespread, they will affect families and the local community. The presence of AADK officials and the police is vital and necessary to curb drug abuse activities in this district to ensure the well-being and safety of the people,” Hamdiah said.
Last Tuesday four youths suspected of drug abuse were arrested at Kampung Senau, Oya. Another 15 individuals in Daro, Pulau Bruit and Ingan were also detained after they were suspected of drug abuse, recently and last month a teacher was arrested on suspicion of peddling drugs here and in Selangau.
