MIRI: The police have detained six local men to assist in the investigation into the death of a lay preacher cum contractor whose lower half body was found floating in Sungai Niah on July 2.

All suspects, aged between 23 and 46, excluding two who surrendered themselves, were detained in an operation held from 2pm to 7pm at Luak in Bakam and Tudan on Thursday.

They are on remand for seven days until Aug 23 to facilitate the investigations into the death of the victim who worked in an offshore industry.

Magistrate Mohd Syafique Mohd Hilmie meted out the order after allowing the remand application made by investigation officer Inspector Joyce Sigai yesterday morning.

All six accused were produced before Magistrate Mohd Syafique.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Meanwhile, a DNA test was carried out to identify the body as that of George Tang Kee Luang, 60.

The late George was reported missing by his family on June 29. On July 2, the lower half of his body was found floating in Sungai Niah at 1.30pm by two crab hunters who alerted the police to the discovery.
