KUCHING: More than 8,000 people are expected to come and enjoy the World Harvest Festival 2017 to be held from 28 April until 30 April, this year.

 Assistant Minister in Chief Minister’s Office (Native Laws and Customs) Datuk John Sikie Tayai said that the World Harvest Festival (WHF) is held to create a colourful and vibrant ethnic festival as a prelude to the statewide Gawai Dayak celebration which will be celebrated from the eve till the end of June annually.

 “The WHF which will take place at Sarawak Cultural Village will also enable the people who participate in the festival to discover something new about other cultures and at the same time appreciate their own cultural heritage,” he added.

 Sikie, who was speaking during the press conference of WHF 2017 at Grand Margherita yesterday also said that the theme play to be presented this year is entitled “Tra Tra Land- Where Honey Sparkles” and based on Bidayuh legend.

 “In scenes enlivened with theatrical effects in outdoor natural setting fronting a lake, the play will introduce Jurai, a young Bidayuh lad who learns to harvest honey through a special song after his missing grandmother taught him in his dream. 

“With his abilities, Jurai manages to get a mystical honey that only can be found deep in the jungle of the Tra Tra land and uses it to cure Raja Manggeng’s only princess’ mysterious illness,” he explained.

 He said the theme play will be staged on the 29 April at Sarawak Cultural Village.

Besides that, there are 12 finalists of Ethnic Beauty Pageant Miss Cultural Harvest Festival 2017 and the grand finale shall be held on the night of 28 April 2017,” he pointed out. 

Sikie said this year WHF will also feature Sape’ World Concert and Workshop with Sape players from France, Japan, Brunei, Indonesia and Negeri Sembilan together with Sarawak renowned Sape players in Sape concert on 30 April, at Sarawak Cultural Village Theatre.

 “There will be also Ironman World Harvest Festival 2017 competition and Sarawak Kitchen Food Culinary Competition throughout the three-day event, where the entry form can be obtained from the official WHF website and Facebook page,” he mentioned.

 He said in conjunction with WHF 2017, there will be also a Gawai Village Stay Tourism package that will start from 28 April until 4 June 2017.

 “Damai Beach Resort will also feature its WHF package of 2 days 1 night stay at Damai Beach Resort for a family of 2 adults and 2 children including accommodation, breakfast and WHF ticket. This special package is worth RM335 Nett and is only available from 28 April until 30 April,” he added.

 The entrance tickets are on sale at the Sarawak Cultural Village at RM60 each for adult and RM30 for children.
