KUCHING: A 10km portion of the first carriageway in the Sungai Tangap stretch is expected to be opened to road users in the next few months.

Lebuhraya Borneo Utara Sdn Bhd (LBU) project manager for Bakun Junction-Sungai Tangap stretch (Works Package 10–WPC10), Chong Cheong Leong said that apart from the 10km stretch, another 2km of first carriageway in the same stretch is already opened to road users.

“We are working on this first carriageway and once we have paved it up to the binder course level, we will open it to road users before we move on to the second carriageway,” he said.

Other than the road work, the project team is also working on the two interchanges in Suai and Niah.

“We are currently working on the bored piling work for Suai Interchange and we expect this 85-metre long interchange to be completed by August next year.

“As for the Niah Interchange, we are currently working on its superstructure. Hopefully, we can complete this interchange by May next year,” said Chong.

Chong said the first carriageway of the three bridges is expected to be opened to road users by end of the year.

“Once it is open to road users, we will move on to work on the second carriageway of the three bridges,” he said.

As for the 170-metre long Niah Bridge, work is now focused on bored piling and its sub structure and is expected to be completed by November next year.

Works Package 10 is divided into two sections namely Bakun with a construction stretch of 41km and Niah with 37km.

Other than the road work, it also involves four interchanges namely Bakun, Suai, Niah and Mile 5-Nyabau, one lay-by in Suai, five bridges and 51 bus shelters.
