KUCHING: Pre-school pupils of Tabika Kemas Kampung Sagah, their parents and teachers at Jalan Kampung Sagah  displayed the spirit of unity and patriotism in celebrating Merdeka Day here yesterday.

Several activities held to mark the celebration included singing the national and state anthems, namely, ‘NegaraKu’ and ‘Ibu Pertiwiku’ respectively and patriotic songs such as ‘Sayangi Malaysiaku’, ‘Suara Malaysia’, ‘Saya Anak Malaysia’ and ‘Aku Negaraku’.

Besides that, the children aged between five and six also had the opportunity to show off their best Merdeka Day costumes during a fashion show, marching and waving the national flag to the ‘Tanggal 31’ song.

The presentation of prizes to the best dressed children and parents was followed by the Merdeka Day cake cutting ceremony.  According to one of the teachers in charge, Elizabeth Samy, one of the highlights of the celebration was the display of the Malaysian flag and a replica of one of the country’s iconic landmarks, the Petronas Twin Towers, made from recycled items.

“It took about two weeks for the pupils to complete the Malaysian flag that was made from egg trays and the Petronas Twin Towers made from drinking plastic bottles,” she said.

“Through these activities, the pupils were able to understand the meaning of Merdeka Day,  learn to love Malaysia and respect one another despite differences in race and religion,” she said.

Elizabeth added throughout August, the pupils were introduced to the history of Malaysia.

“As for the fashion show, pupils also had the chance to wear the traditional attires of the different races.  This activity aimed to build self-confidence among the  pupils  and make them understand their own culture more,” she said.
