KUCHING: The Development Bank of Sarawak (DBOS) will be operational from 1 January next year to accelerate the state’s economic development, especially in rural areas.
Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed this when officiating the State Level Gawai Dayak dinner held at a local hotel here last Saturday night.
“Actually, we have formed the Board of Governors (for DBOS),” he said, reiterating that Sarawak must have its own bank in order to accelerate economic development, particularly in the rural areas.
Johari also announced that the state government had allocated two pieces of land at Ong Tiang Swee Road for the Dayak Cultural Foundation and also for the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry to build their own centres.
“With these centres, I am confident that the Dayak community will prepare themselves to participate in the development that we have charted for Sarawak in the future.
“I am sure the Dayak Cultural Foundation and the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be able to play their part in the expansion of our economic cake in the state,” added Johari.
Meanwhile, the organising chairman of the State Level Gawai Dayak dinner, Dato Gerawat Gala stressed that the young Dayaks must acquire the necessary skills and professional training to prepare themselves for the Digital Economy.
“The majority of the Dayak population located in the rural areas can meaningfully participate in this Digital Economy if the government can provide the necessary infrastructure such as road and telecommunication facilities to ensure internet connectivity and access for the rural communities.
“We trust that the government will put in place these infrastructure in a timely manner,” said Gerawat.
Also present were Deputy Chief Ministers, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing as well as other state and federal ministers.
