KUCHING: The Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions (FCAKSSD held a children and parents lantern colouring and decorating contest last Sunday afternoon.
The lantern colouring contest, held at Aeroville Mall here, attracted 65 teams. There were 12 teams in the secondary school category, 34 teams in the primary school category and 13 teams in the kindergarten category.
Each team was given two paper lanterns but they had to bring along their own colouring and decorating materials to complete the task within two hours, namely from 2pm to 4pm.
Organising chairman Lawrence Soo Kie Lung, who is also the chairman of the Education Bureau of the Youth Wing of the federation, revealed that among the aims of the contest were to enrich the activities of the Moon Cake Festival and to let parents to impart knowledge of the Chinese culture to the younger generation.
The contest also aimed to promote love and closer relationships between parents and their children.
The result of the competition will be announced on September 8, together with the result of the lantern making competition which will be held on Sept 8.
Entry for the lantern making competition closed on August 23. Participants can make the lanterns beforehand and bring them to the competition venue for submission to the organiser at Aeroville Mall from 4pm to 5pm on Sept 8.
Judging will start from 6pm and the result is expected to be announced at 10pm followed by prize giving ceremony.
The competition, which is open to members of the public, is divided into two categories — Traditional Chinese culture design and Sarawak ethnic culture design.
The top three winners in each category will receive RM900, RM500 and RM300 respectively and there are five consolation prizes of RM100 each in each category.
