KUCHING: Durian mooncakes, anyone? They are said to make nice complements to traditional mooncakes for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival (Sept 13).
One of the city’s oldest mooncake shops in Padungan sells freshly made durian mooncakes daily. In fact, Chin Hiang Chay has been in the mooncake business since the early 1940s.
The owner, Tsan Keng Joo, 53, said besides the traditional baked mooncakes, the shop also offers non-baked snow skin mooncakes (also known as Crystal durian mooncakes) that go for RM12 per piece for any flavour).
“Everybody loves durian, so we thought why not offer durian mooncakes,” he said, adding that the shop started selling them a few years back.
Tsan revealed that the filling is made from ingredients imported from Hong Kong, Thailand and Malaya.
“As for the special flour for the snow skin mooncakes, we import it too,” he said.
For those who don’t like durians, the shop offers other varieties of mooncakes flavoured with dragon fruits, kiwi fruits, raspberries, and mangoes. Other flavours are green tea, golden corn, yam and tiramisu.
“For those who prefer traditional mooncakes as well as the durian-flavoured ones, we have them here at RM13.50 each,” he said.
He said traditional mooncakes cost a bit more because they require time for baking.
“For those who purchase more than four we give them special discounts,” he said.
Tsan’s mooncakes are always fresh; all handmade and have been selling since the early 1940s. The shop at No.165, Padungan Road, 93100, Kuching can be contacted on 082-243814 or 082-255771.
For the festival, Tsan has extended his business hours from 8.30am till 8.30pm daily.
