MUKAH: Fishermen have been advised against misusing their licences. Sarawak Fisheries director Bohari Leng said the licence allows them to fish within the permitted zone.
He added that the fishermen have to make full use of their licences and focus on their jobs in order to improve their livelihood.
“Fishing is a career as well as a business, so they have to focus on their careers,” he said during the closing of Sarawak Fisheries Department Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) engagement programme with Mukah Fisheries Community at the Mukah Fisheries Office hall here yesterday.
Bohari said even though fishermen have been categorised as poor, not all are poor.
“While some are poor, there are also many of them who are rich and own a number of vessels, which shows that fishing as a profession can give you good return.”
He also advised the fishermen to take good care of their boats and vessels in order to sustain their job.
More than 50 fishermen attended the two-day (Sept 4-5) programme which featured briefings on related matters by the department and other
agencies.
The briefing yesterday focused on the formation of EAFM which was delivered by three speakers.
