KUCHING: More than 24 countries will be participating in the 10th Asian Bird Fair 2019 at Kuching Waterfront here from Sept 27 to Oct 1.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the objective of the event “is to promote our state’s nature tourism as well as the bird species.”

He also revealed that the event is a collaboration between the  Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Sarawak Tourism Board, Ecotourism and Conservation Society Malaysia and Sarawak Bird Club.

Meanwhile, Ecotourism and Conservation Society Malaysia CEO Andrew Sebastian said more than 70 booths will showcase different species of birds from various countries.

“Besides that, schools in Kuching will also get a chance to be involved in the fair as they will learn the importance of preserving bird species as well as obtain more knowledge about birds,” he said yesterday.

Among the programmes are international eco forum, schools programme (involving schools from Kuching), children programme (such as coloring contest), and public talks.

“Public talks during the event are free access. Ten countries will give talks during that day and we also open to public to come and give talks as well to share their experience about birds,” said Andrew.

He also revealed that there are 796 different species of birds found in Malaysia while 65 rare bird
species are found in the world.

Among the countries that have confirmed their participation are Cambodia, Australia, Kenya, Mongolia, Nepal, Panama, Peru, the Philippines, China, Taiwan, Singapore and Solomon Islands, Spain, United States of America, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Uganda and Argentina.
